Shifting winds continue to cause concern for fire crews in Wekweètì

Fires in Wekweètì continued to grow out of control overnight with crews reporting the largest at 110 Hectares in size.

Winds coming from the north are expected to push the fire south towards Snare Lake; however, crews say wind shifting along the lakeshore is causing some winds from the opposite direction as well, which may cause unpredictable fire behaviour.

According to NWT Fire, structure protection and limiting fire growth towards the airport remains the number one priority.

NWT Fire says they are depending on wetlands to slow the fire at the western tip of the lake, and crews continue to establish control lines around the community.
