NTPC comments on workplace death

Following the death of Northwest Territories Power Corporation (NTPC) employee Michael Chinna that occurred in 2021, NTPC has issued a statement regarding the charges laid against them.

The Workers Safety and Compensation Commission (WSCC) sued the power corporation in February 2022, for eleven charges related to Safety Act and OHS violations.

The NTPC entered a guilty plea for one count related to a contravention of the Safety Act on June 23, 2023. They were issued a fine amounting to $200,000 to be paid to the workers’ protection fund.

“We offer our condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of Michael Chinna. NTPC was deeply saddened by the loss of Michael Chinna,” the NTPC says. “We have also learned from this incident, and we have used it to improve our safety systems and processes,” they continue.

According to reports, Chinna was injured due to ice and snow buildup above a door at Jackfish Power Plant in Yellowknife and later died in hospital.

“We remain committed to protecting all of our workers from all of the hazards at all of our work sites, including falling snow and ice,” the NTPC says.

The WSCC says following the guilty plea by the NTPC, the remaining ten charges were withdrawn.
