First North Slave Fire of the Year Reported Far South of Dettah

A single fire has been reported in the North Slave region, far to the south of Dettah.

The Fire Danger Forecast for the entire North Slave Region remains at “Low,” and it is the only fire that currently exists in the region.

At the time of writing, there are only four other fires reported in the Territory. One is near Enterprise, one is near Tathlina Lake, one is to the east of Sambaa K’e, and the last one is to the Southwest of Fort Liard.

All of these fires are overwinter fires, and do not pose a serious threat to any nearby structures or communities. Work is underway to have these fires extinguished as soon as possible.

Mike Westwick, the Wildfire Information Officer for the GNWT, has shared that there are many reports being sent in of campfires being left unattended throughout the Territory. He noted that this is especially prevalent around the Yellowknife River Territorial Park. He reminds Northerners that this is irresponsible behaviour, and poses a serious threat. As the weather continues to get drier throughout the year, he encourages locals to keep themselves, their friends, and their family members accountable when using fires.

He adds that burning conditions are already here, and that people need to be on high alert, especially in the southern areas of the Territory.
