Full Fire Ban Implemented in Hay River ahead of High Weekend Wind

A full fire ban has been put into effect for the Town of Hay River.

This was put into effect in response to an upcoming wind event in the area. The coming weekend is expected to see winds blowing up to 85 km/h starting on Friday. The wind is expected to come from the southwest through the Fort Liard area.

There is a possibility that this could cause a small fire in the area to spread even further. If the fire does increase, communities in the area, particularly Fort Liard, should be able to see smoke.

NWT Fire is trying to get ahead of the situation by cutting off potential growth opportunities for the fire, but note that there is a possibility that the fire could become very difficult to control under the wind conditions.

The wind is expected to die down later in the day on Saturday, with higher moisture levels coming to the Hay River and Fort Smith areas. Dehcho is expected to stay very dry, with occasional spots of wind.

For the North Slave region, rain is expected in the forecast, and should limit any potential fire behaviour.
