‘Important 48 hours’ as 174K hectare blaze continues to burn near Yellowknife

The wildfire outside Yellowknife remains out of control and was last mapped at 174,103 hectares burned standing 15km away from the city.

According to NWT Fire, today and Friday will put significant pressure on the eastern perimeter of the fire close to Yellowknife with high temperatures, low moisture, and possible heavy winds.

“This is an important 48 hours in the effort to reduce the threat to the capital region with the possibility of fire escaping the perimeter and eastward growth,”

Officials say they will be doing everything possible to continue to keep the blaze at bay and reduce the fire’s threat to the city.

A small scale controlled burn was successfully executed yesterday, reducing some risk of eastward growth.

Additionally, work expanding the network of fuel breaks, direct attacks, and air crews have made significant progression in reducing fire risk.
