Highway 3 wildfire grows to 100,000 hectares, aircrews continue to struggle due to low visibility

NWT Fire has determined the Highway 3 wildfire is out of control and is now estimated at over 100,000 hectares burned and the highway has closed once again.

Extreme wind from the east continued today alongside hot, dry conditions led to growth inside and around BehchokÇ«Ì€.

The flames now stand around 3km from Edzo at their closest point after breaching Rae last night.

“The fire breached Rae last night after a 20km run in less than four hours driven by extreme winds. 3 homes were lost. Our hearts go out to those affected,” NWT Fire says.

NWT Fire reports aircrews are still struggling to access the fire from the sky due to extreme visibility challenges due to large smoke plumes visible throughout the area.

“Only small sections of the fire have been accessible by air due to extreme visibility challenges,” NWT Fire says. “This continues to create difficulties in creating new maps of the fire,” they add.

According to NWT Fire, structure loss along Highway 3 has not been assessed because protecting Behchokǫ̀ remains priority number one for crews as they continue to establish lines and sprinkler setup on critical infrastructure.
