‘Ignition operations have been successful thus far’: Controlled burns continue in Highway 3 wildfire fight

As the blaze between Yellowknife and Behchokǫ̀ continues to grow, the Incident Management Team actioning the fire has released an update to their plans.

According to the incident management team, following last night’s evacuation, the priority has shifted to structure protection along Highway 3 to the south, and the community of Behchokǫ̀ to the west.

“Ignition operations have been successful thus far,” the team reports. 

Planned ignitions to continue the Stagg River line fell through yesterday due to poor conditions and visibility in the area. As of the Morning of July 25, 2023, NWT Fire has not said whether they will continue Stagg River line operations today.

NWT Fire says crews have started to mop up fire breaches on the line west of Stagg River to prevent growth towards Behchokǫ̀.

NWT Fire adds an ignition plan to burn off vegetation in priority areas between kilometre markers 276 and 290 is in development and aerial support is on standby to support ignition operations.
