Sambaa K’e fire crews waiting for ‘favourable conditions’ to conduct second controlled burn

Fire suppression operations and sprinkler setups continued last night to combat the Sombaa K’e wildfires.

The wildfire remains out of control and is approaching the size of the 2016 Fort McMurray wildfire. The flames in Fort Mac reached 589,000 hectares and the Sambaa K’e fires burned an estimated 450,000 hectares.

NWT Fire says the fire was more accurately mapped yesterday and continues to hold around 8km from the community.

According to NWT Fire, warmer conditions continue to cause concern for crews as the area becomes drier after several days of precipitation last week.

Smoke continues to cause issues for South Slave communities as winds continue to push smoke across the territory.

NWT Fire says burn preparations have been completed and crews are now waiting for favourable weather to conduct a second controlled ignition.
