Two More Structures Lost in Sambaa K’e Wildfire

The latest update on the Sambaa K’e wildfire states that the blaze is still out of control, and was last measured at 265,000 hectares burned.

Unfavorable wind conditions and hot, dry conditions continue to provide challenges to fire fighting efforts, though the fire has not advanced any closer to Sambaa K’e. Emergency crews have been conducting small scale backburns in an attempt to protect valuable property.

Two more individuals have lost their cabins to the fire, and it is believed to have happened during an explosive growth of the fire that took place in early June.

While the fire still has not reached the community itself, there is still a risk that things could take a turn for the worse in the coming days. Emergency responders are making continued use of air tankers to complete drops on priority targets near the community. Crews are also working to try and make sure that no new flare ups occur.

The full response team consists of 48 personnel, which includes ignitions specialists, a structure protection specialist, multiple airtankers, and 3 helicopters.
