YK1 school district appoints Cindi Vaselenak as new superintendent

Alberta educator Cindi Vaselenak has been chosen as the new Superintendent of Schools and Chief Executive Officer for Yellowknife Education District No. 1.

Vaselenak worked as a teacher, principal and superintendent in Alberta for 34 years.

She will start in the position on August 1.

A nation-wide search was run to find a candidate for the position, according to Tina Drew, Board Chair.

“Our Canada-wide advertising resulted in a significant number of applications,” said in a statement. “Dr. Vaselenak was selected from a field of truly outstanding candidates because of her demonstrated leadership capabilities and for her commitment to excellence in serving our students and their families.”

Vaselenak most recently worked as an education consultant for the Alberta School Boards Association and as a sessional instructor at the University of Alberta

In March 2019 Vaselenak was named the Alberta Superintendent of the Year receiving the provincial EXL Award for excellence in School System Leadership.

Vaselenak said she is honoured to be selected, adding a passion for lifelong learning brought her to the north.

“ I am impressed with the diversity of educational opportunities, especially the authentic response to the TRC Calls to Action, provided for students in the District,” she said in a statement. “The YK1 mission “Education For Life” will challenge me to inspire and be inspired by the exceptional educators, students and members of the community.”
