Cochrane issues statement on National Housing Strategy

The Federal Government released the National Housing Strategy.

The co-chair of the Canadian Alliance to End Homelessness is giving the Prime Minister’s affordable housing plan a thumbs up; however, Kevin Page is concerned parts of the plan do not take effect until 2021.

… the North and specifically the Northwest Territories requires proportionately more support to reach the housing conditions of southern Canada.

He adds he’s been told the number of homeless people is much higher than what we think.

Former Tory housing minister Candace Bergen says provinces and municipalities do not need the feds telling them how to address homelessness.

NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh says many people cannot wait years for parts of the program to begin.

The Minister Responsible for the Northwest Territories Housing Corporation and Minister Responsible for Addressing Homelessness, Caroline Cochrane, issued a statement.

Cochrane addressed the differences between the North and the South when it comes to the issue of homelessness.

There is acknowledgment from the Government of the Canada that the North and specifically the Northwest Territories requires proportionately more support to reach the housing conditions of southern Canada.

She would then say she hopes the Territorial government and the Federal government can work together on a comprehensive plan for housing in the North.

The Government of the Northwest Territories is committed to working with the federal government to create a strong and comprehensive approach to providing housing for NWT residents.
