Poop could make your dog famous.
Maybe your dog looks so good that you can’t get through a walk without people stopping them in the street. Maybe your dog is the strong, silent, charismatic type. Maybe they’re just happy-go-lucky and easy to get along with.
Whatever your dog’s big selling point is, they could become the poster dog for Yellowknife in a new citywide campaign.
The City of Yellowknife needs a dog to become the face of its Scoop the Poop campaign, which reminds dog owners to clean up after their pets.
Rather than hiring an expensive, professionally adorable dog from down south, city officials have decided to go local and recruit budding amateur talent.
“We looked at what other communities have done and thought it would be fun to get a local dog to be the mascot and help encourage people,” said Brian Kelln, the city’s community services program manager.
“They would be our poster dog: there will be signs out and posters available, we’re looking at getting some bags with the dog on them, and they’ll be on our website and in the media. That dog will be portrayed throughout the messaging.”
How does it work? To enter, you need to submit your dog’s photo via the City of Yellowknife’s website.

Then, in March, there’ll be a popularity contest on Facebook to see which dashing dog comes out on top. The winner gets a photo shoot and becomes Scoop the Poop’s mascot. The owners might even get a gift bag.
The deadline to enter is March 6.
“The idea is trying to make the community more conscientious in cleaning up after their pets,” said Kelln of the new campaign.
“We want to encourage a healthier environment. A clean city is a happy city.”
