New Conservation Strategies Developed for Northern Mountain Caribou

Some new plans have been developed to help conservation efforts in the North regarding Northern Mountain Caribou.

First created in July of 2023, The NWT Management Plan is a collaborative effort by multiple conservation groups to help maintain the population of the Northern Mountain Caribou, which are listed as a species of Special Concern in Canada. It is based on a similar plan previously developed by the Government of Canada from 2012 both of which share the same goal of preventing the species from becoming Endangered or Extinct.

The new agreement better lays out the actions and strategies that the NWT authorities will be taking to help the heard. The success of the plan is dependant on cooperation of the other groups who have wildlife management responsibilities in the NWT.

The progress made on the Plan will be reported every five years, as is required under the Species at Risk Act.
