Fuel Spill at YK Office Forces Building to Remain Closed

A building in downtown Yellowknife has been closed to both the public and it’s own employees after a fuel spill occurred inside.

The spill occurred on the afternoon of December 31st in the Nova Plaza building on 52nd Street. A leak from a pipe resulted in about 10 litres of Petroleum fuel to spill out from a tank on the property.

Employees who work at the building, which includes Environment and Climate Change Canada, as well as the Department of Education, Culture and Employment, have been ordered to work from home while the situation is resolved and the spill is cleaned up.

A representative from the city shared that the landlord of the building is in the process of determining the extent of damage from the fuel leak. Once that is assessed, a determination will be made on when the building can be reopened to tenants and the public.
