Giant Mine Board to Hold Public Research Update Meeting

The Giant Mine Oversight Board will be holding a public meeting in mid November to go over the progress of their latest research operation.

On Tuesday, November 14 at 7:00 pm, members of the Giant Mine Oversight Board (GMOB) will be meeting at the Explorer Hotel with various researchers who will make formal presentations on the progress of each of their research programs. The community is invited to attend and learn more about the programs, results to date and next steps.

GMOB’s mandate includes finding a permanent solution for the 237,000 tonnes of toxic arsenic trioxide dust currently stored underground at the Giant Mine. In 2018, GMOB initiated a partnership with university researchers from across Canada to identify potential remediation options.

GMOB is an independent body that functions under the direction of a six-member Board of Directors appointed individually by the Parties to the Giant Mine Remediation Project Environmental Agreement. These Parties are Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs Canada, the Government of the Northwest Territories, the Yellowknives Dene First Nation, North Slave Metis Alliance, Alternatives North, and the City of Yellowknife.
