WSCC lays charges after workplace death at Gahcho Kué Mine Maintenance Shop

On August 25, 2023 the Workers’ Safety and Compensation Commission filed seven charges against construction equipment supplier SMS Equipment Inc. in Territorial Court under the Safety Act and the Mine Health Safety Act.

According to the WSCC, SMS Equipment is charged with multiple counts alleging Safety Act and Mine Health and Safety Act violations.

Included, the WSCC alleges SMS Equipment failed to maintain their establishment that the safety of their employees “was not likely to be endangered,” and that it failed to take “every reasonable measure” to protect employee health and safety.

The charges were filed after an investigation by WSCC Safety Officers in relation to a workplace death that occurred last September at the Gahcho Kué Mine Maintenance Shop.

The first court appearance is scheduled for October 24, 2023, and WSCC says they are not able to provide further information or comment at this time.
