The GNWT has updated an earlier announcement, and have decided that Highway 1 will be closed as of 7:00 pm, on Friday, September 1st.
The Department of Infrastructure, working alongside the Department of Environment and Climate Change, as well as the Emergency Management Organization, will be officially closing Highway 1 from the Alberta border to the Kakisa access road km 187 later tonight. GNWT staff will continue to monitor the highway, and will provide an update on when it can be re-opened.
High winds are expected to increase the intensity of the fires this weekend, which crews are preparing for. Highway 1 will remain open for essential operations until the 7pm closure. The GNWT reminds residents that conditions can change on very shortnotice, and travel is highly discouraged at this time.
Highways 2, 5, and 6 are closed at this time, though first responders and trucks carrying fuel and groceries may be granted access based on highway conditions.
Highway 3 is currently open to southbound traffic, though is closed to northbound traffic between Behchoko and Yellowkife.
