Minor Changes to North Slave Fires as Crews Prepare for Intense Winds

In the latest updates from NWT Fire, the blazes across the North Slave Complex have seen minimal changes in the last few days, though crews are preparing for heavy winds, which could create more intense fire activity.

Work continues around Dettah and the Ingraham trail. Protections are still being put in place for values at risk, though there has been no report of any structures lost in some time. The fires closest to Dettah and the Ingraham Trail have seen little to no movement since the last update.

In the Yellowknife/Behchoko fires, crews have finished construction of a sprinkler line to the west of Yellowknife, as well as Fire Smarting and Fuel Mitigation efforts within the city. Direct attacks on the fire are continuing throughout the day.

Throughout the North Slave complex, crews are preparing for wind conditions to grow much stronger for the rest of the week. While there is a chance for some rain on Thursday evening, there is also the chance that it brings along a thunderstorm, and more lightning. Extreme winds are expected on Friday, with a low pressure system expected to form just north of the Great Slave Lake. Winds will be getting stronger overnight, and into Friday afternoon, with gusts in the range of 40 to 50 km/h.

Combined with hotter than average temperatures, the wind conditions are expected to create more intense fires for the next few days.
