Fires expected to move 5km east towards Yellowknife, expected to reach Highway 3 tomorrow

The wildfire outside of Yellowknife remains out of control and was last mapped at 162,936 hectares burned.

According to NWT Fire, the blaze now stands 17km northwest of Yellowknife at its closest point; however, fire experts say strong west winds will likely push the flames towards the City by 5km today.

NWT Fire says the fire will likely reach Highway 3 tomorrow driven by winds, which may lead to closures.

Additionally, NWT Fire says without rain, the fire may reach the outskirts of Yellowknife by the weekend. Rain is currently forecasted, but NWT Fire says nothing is guaranteed.

Significant fire behaviour is expected today with visible smoke and ash in Yellowknife, N’Dilo, and Dettah.
