Crews complete numerous fire break lines and sprinkler areas, City of Yellowknife continues preparedness measures

As part of fire smart measures being taken by the City, the City of Yellowknife completed several firebreak and sprinkler areas in several communities.

According to Yellowknife Mayor Rebecca Alty, due to the declaration of a local state of emergency, 12 companies and the military are working to complete fire preparations.

“A big thanks to all crews who have been working hard again today to minimize the fire risk to Yellowknife,” Mayor Alty says.

The City says once the initial work is completed, crews will begin work behind Kam Lake and pass through previously completed areas and widen them more. Additionally, more sprinklers are scheduled to be added to the Grace Lake area.

“Please avoid the work areas, for the safety of yourself, and to ensure crews can work as hard and quick as possible, please do not go out there just to check it out,” Alty asks.

The City says fire experts are continuing to monitor the fire and the plan may be updated an modified as needed.
