The GNWT has released a secondary evacuation notice advising anyone remaining in Hay River to leave immediately as the entire town is no longer safe for residents.
“Any person who can message family and friends in Hay River tell them to go to [the] airport now,” the GNWT says. “Do not wait to drive on Highway 2.”
According to the GNWT, there are no emergency personnel on Highway 2, therefore the highway is no longer an option to get out.
Emergency personnel are ‘severely’ restricted, according to the GNWT, and cannot operate safely as conditions continue to worsen.
“Your safest way out is on the plane, now go to the airport now,” the GNWT adds.
