Dettah wildfire travels nearly 10km since last report, structure protection begins

The wildfire nearing Dettah has grown nearly 14,000 hectares since NWT Fire’s last report and now stands 29km from the community.

According to NWT Fire, dry, windy conditions today caused the blaze to travel nearly 10 km since the last report and is expected to continue growth in the north and west.

The flames have officially reached the south shore of Defeat Lake, putting cabins at risk. NWT Fire is currently assessing options, but residents are encouraged to take FireSmart actions now by setting up sprinklers and preparing to leave the area on short notice.

Additionally, NWT Fire says they are expecting the blaze to reach the south end of Jennejohn Lake by the end of the day.

NWT Fire adds that the number one priority for crews is working with YKDFN to establish protections for Dettah and a structure protection team has been deployed to assist the community.

Currently, Dettah, N’Dilo, and Yellowknife are not at risk due to the fire.
