Conference of Management Authorities lists Peary and boreal caribou as Threatened for next ten years

The Conference of Management Authorities (CMA) has officially reached consensus to list boreal caribou and Peary caribou for another 10 years as ‘Threatened’ species on the NWT List of Species at Risk.

According to the CMA, both species were first listed as Threatened in the NWT in 2014 and the terms were extended by the Minister of Environment and Climate Change.

The CMA says recovery planning is ongoing for Peary caribou in the territory and a recovery strategy is currently in place for boreal caribou.

Additionally, the CMA says changes in recovery planning should not affect hunters in the NWT; however, the CMA adds that conservation depends on the cooperation of several groups in charge of wildlife management.

“Adding a species to the NWT List of Species at Risk does not mean harvesting must stop,” the CMA says.

“Keeping boreal and Peary caribou on the NWT List of Species at Risk does not automatically change quotas, by-laws or regulations already in place.”

“Successful conservation of these species will depend on the commitment and cooperation of many different groups with responsibility for wildlife management in the NWT, together with NWT residents and visitors,” they add.

The CMA has released additional information and status reports available at www.nwtspeciesatrisk.ca.
