Behchokǫ̀ pet rescue team seeking volunteers

Area local Jason Card has organized a pet rescue team to get dogs and other pets out of Behchokǫ̀ during the evacuation.

Jason and his team have successfully rescued 14 dogs from the area so far including a mother and eight pups.

“When I was leaving there were lots of loose dogs, most of the people are on holidays,” Behchokǫ̀ local Vicky Joy tells MyTrueNorthNow.

Card and his team have been relocating dogs to the Yellowknife Multiplex for temporary housing, but Card says the biggest priority is finding more suitable temporary homes for the animals.

“What we need is places to board them,” Card tells MyTrueNorthNow. “Currently, we need volunteers to come and evacuate the animals, and people who are willing to board them temporarily,” he adds.

Card’s team is working with Vets Without Borders to find shelters, but Card says his 15-crate truck is not enough to evacuate every animal left in the community.

Interested individuals can contact Jason or his team members on the Behchokǫ̀ rant & raves Facebook page.
