Yellowknife Preparing to Take In Behchoko Evacuees

The City of Yellowknife is getting ready to take in residents from Behchoko, in the event that the community will be evacuated in response to the nearby wildfires.

The City is working with several Government of the Northwest Territories departments through the North Slave Emergency Measures Organization (EMO) in responding to the need to provide immediate shelter for evacuees arriving in our community. As the City did with residents of Hay River and Kátł’odeeche First Nation in May, the Multiplex will be closed to the public until further notice and will be converted to provide immediate shelter for evacuees arriving to Yellowknife. Evacuees are being asked to register with Yellowknife Health and Social Services Authority (YHSSA) at the Multiplex.

“The City is once again ready, willing and able to help our neighbours in their time of need,” said Mayor Rebecca Alty. “We are grateful to everyone who delivers supports and services to provide the residents of Behchokǫ̀ with a home away from home.”

More information on ways to support evacuees will be provided as it becomes available.
