Aggravated Assault & Erratic Driving in RCMP Weekend Report

Over the weekend, Yellowknife RCMP dealt with a case of Aggravated Assault, while the officers in Fort Providence encountered a speeding vehicle. These cases were included in the RCMP’s weekend reports.

On July 22nd, at approximately 7:15 p.m. the Yellowknife RCMP responded to a complaint of an assault in the parking lot of Capital Suites on Franklin Avenue. RCMP attended and located a male who was unresponsive and suffering serious injuries.

The victim was transported to the hospital and then subsequently airlifted to Edmonton in serious condition. RCMP located and arrested a male suspect a short time later. The 19-year-old man from Nunavut was charged with aggravated assault, common assault and uttering threats.

The man has been remanded into custody pending his next court appearance later today. The investigation into this matter is on-going with the assistance of the Yellowknife General Investigation Section.

Also on July 22nd, at approximately 11:35 p.m., the Fort Providence RCMP were conducting highway traffic enforcement when they located a vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed. The vehicle was clocked at 145km/h in the 100km/h zone.

The driver was stopped and issued a nearly $300 ticket for the excessive speed. Speeds this high in excess of the posted speed limit pose a risk to the driver’s and other vehicles on the roadway and can sometimes also result in criminal charges for dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.
