Yellowknife RCMP issues safety tips for FOTR festival-goers

The Yellowknife RCMP is reminding everyone planning to attend Folk on the Rocks this weekend to do so safely.

The RCMP says attendees can expect to see officers at the festival and patrolling roads and the highway near the area, which the RCMP says will include check stops.

“The Yellowknife RCMP want all concert goers to have an enjoyable, but most importantly, safe experience at this years Folk on the Rocks,” the RCMP says.

According to the RCMP, following a few safety tips might help festival-goers stay out of trouble.

Safe driving techniques, planning ahead, and safe alcohol consumption are some key tips the RCMP says will help attendees have a safe and fun time at Folk this year.

According to the RCMP, traffic congestion is expected and pedestrians walking from drop off points may be walking on the road and drivers are asked to slow down and drive carefully around the festival grounds.

Last year, the RCMP saw no calls to the Folk on the Rocks site at all. According to Corporal Matt Halstead, none of the files for the Yellowknife Detachment over the weekend last year had a clear connection to the festival.

“It’s great news and not surprising,” Halstead tells MyTrueNorthNow. “The event staff and planners in past years have done a really great job planning and providing shuttle services for this event.” Halstead adds.

The RCMP is also reminding any attendees planning to drink alcohol to do so safely and only in designated areas and always plan a safe ride home.

“It’s everyone’s responsibility to keep an eye on each other,” the RCMP says. “If you see something suspicious or have safety concerns, don’t hesitate to approach one of the RCMP officers on site or any of the event staff,” the RCMP adds.
