Canadian Rangers Conducting Exercises on Great Slave Lake

Until July 15th members of the 1st Canadian Ranger Patrol Group will be conducting a long range boat patrol across the south shore of Great Slave Lake in the vicinity of Fort Resolution. Activities will include long range cross water navigation, in-shore search and rescue skills, and temporary helicopter landing zones. Basic Canadian Ranger skills training will also occur during this time.

The training will occur in two zones locations, Mission Island for link up and classroom training. Confirmatory skills and a search exercise will occur in the vicinity of the old fish plant on Simpson Island.

This activity is being conducted as part of Exercise Ranger Searcher, a Canadian Ranger Type 3 patrol, that will see multiple patrols link up and conduct training. Canadian Rangers from the Fort Simpson, Yellowknife, Fort Smith, Hay River and Behchoko will converge and link up with the Ranger Patrol in Fort Resolution. A headquarters element from Yellowknife along with some local Canadian Rangers will be controlling the exercise out of Mission Island in Fort Resolution.

Participating Canadian Rangers will be armed with their issued C-19 rifles. The camping areas will be remediated prior to departure at the conclusion of the training event. Members of the public will see an increased boating presence in these areas that will include mock search and rescue scenarios. 1 CRPG is coordinating with local emergency agencies to minimize accidental calls for persons in distress during the search scenario.
