Yellowknife RCMP Respond to Mental Health Incident

Yellowknife RCMP were recently called upon to do a wellness check on a male adult who was undergoing a mental health emergency.

The incident occured on June 11th, and once the RCMP arrived at the scene, the male barricaded himself inside a room at the residence while wielding a knife. Members of the “G” Division Critical Incident Program were deployed to the scene, and after seven hours of careful negotiation, the situation was safely resolved.

The “G” Division Critical Incident Program consists of the Emergency Response Team, Crisis Negotiation Team, and Police Dog Services, as well as behind the scenes support resources. They are called to high-risk situations where specialized skill-sets, such as crisis-negotiation or an enhanced tactical response is required.

This is the second time in a week where the Critical Incident Program was deployed to successfully diffuse a mental-health-related crisis in Yellowknife. Both people were transported to the hospital for an assessment and medical follow-up.

The Yellowknife RCMP have given their thanks to the public, the City, and EMS workers for their help in resolving these incidents.
