Special air quality statement issued for Hay River due to wildfire smoke

Environment Canada has issued a special air quality statement as wildfire smoke from the Hay River, and northern Alberta fires continues to linger in the Hay River and Yellowknife regions.

According to Environment Canada “Air quality and visibility due to wildfire smoke can fluctuate over short distances and can vary considerably from hour to hour.”, and residents are being warned the smoke could lead to increased coughing, throat irritation, headaches or shortness of breath. Children, seniors, and those with cardiovascular or lung disease, such as asthma, are especially at risk.

Experts suggest stopping or reducing outdoor activity levels f breathing becomes uncomfortable or you or someone in your care begins to feel unwell. Residents are urged to contact their health care provider if they develop any symptoms.

If you are required to spend long lengths of time outside, you’re encouraged to wear a well-fitted respirator type mask, like an N95, that does not allow air to pass through small openings between the mask and face.
