Yellowknife, NWT – The Government of the Northwest Territories says it will be coming up with its own regulations for fracking projects in the territory.
That was announced by Industry, Tourism and Investment Minister David Ramsay in the Legislative Assembly earlier this week.
Some MLA’s say they expected the issue of fracking to arise in the house after it was brought up during the Elder’s Parliament a couple weeks ago.
Yellowknife Centre MLA Robert Hawkins says he supports more government policy on the divisive process.
“Principally I support fracking in the essence of immense regulation because you only get one shot at doing it right. We need to think about this under the context of best practices and under the most ideal conditions that work for people so responsible fracking has to be done first and foremost.”
Ramsay says the next step is to consult the public, Aboriginal governments and industry on how to best regulate the process.
He says he plans to announce a timeline for public consultations later this month.
