NWT Fire reminds residents to be mindful of preventable forest fires

NWT Fire has issued a warning for NWT residents regarding human-caused fires in the territory.

After an abandoned campfire sprung out of control in the Dehcho region, NWT Fire is reminding residents the territory is still experiencing extreme drought conditions.

Officials say the long fire season is not over yet, and crews do not have the resources to attend preventable fires.

“Every time a crew has to deal with a preventable fire, that’s more resources not available to defend communities, highways, and public safety,” NWT Fire says.

Additionally, officials are reminding residents that much of the territory is under a fire ban; however, if an individual must have a fire for cooking or to keep warm, they are asked to stir-soak-repeat when putting out a fire and never leave fires unattended.
