Municipal and Community Affairs Minister Shane Thompson renewed the Territorial State of Emergency (SOE) that was originally declared on August 15, 2023.
The SOE was renewed for a first time on August 29, two weeks after its initial installation due to the wildfire situation across multiple NWT regions. This second extension will see the SOE in effect until September 18, 2023.
The measure allows the GNWT and community governments to better manage the ongoing wildfire situation through additional resources granted under the Emergency Management Act.
Minister Thompson is permitted to declare a SOE for a period of up to 14 days, and may renew the measure if the emergency still exists, and the State of Emergency applies to all of the NWT.
