Town of Hay River says it’s hiring replacement workers

Mayor Andrew Cassidy says the Town of Hay River will start to hire replacements for striking workers.

The strike by some 30 town workers is now almost five months old.

Cassidy says residents are owed the services for which they are paying, and which – in some cases – have been unavailable since the strike began on February 9.

The town is now set to advertise for administrative support, project management and recreation centre workers.

The Union of Northern Workers, leading the strike, calls the town’s actions ‘unacceptable’. The town says it has no choice after its efforts to negotiate were “constantly rejected”.
