Rain gives Hay River/KFN fire crews a chance to slow wildfires

The fire in Hay River/KFN remains out of control and was last mapped at approximately 2927 Hectares, yesterday afternoon, down by ten hectares since the last report. wind shifted north and gusted but fire crews say this was expected.

Crews say unexpected rain and lower winds led to a good opportunity to get significant work done. Air support from tankers and helicopters at the south end of the fire were successful in slowing growth towards highway 5, and the fire was not observed to have grown significantly in the south.

According to NWT Fire, smoke still rolled into the area, but crews managed to strengthen a dozer line around the southwest corner of the fire to limit the spread.

Structure protection continued yesterday and through the night, and crews are now working to widen the road through KFN and strengthen defenses at the Old Village.
