Helen Wedawin said she had a feeling July 26 would be a good day when she saw four eagles and a bison. She didn’t know how right she was – she’d be ending the day $21,000 wealthier thanks to a $2 BLACKJACK instant ticket she’d been holding on to for a couple of weeks.
“I got home and was bored, so I decided to scratch my tickets,” she said as she claimed her prize. “I thought it would be a $2 winner, but then I realized it was $21,000!” Wedawin said. “I asked my mom to check to make sure. She was so happy for me, and I just started crying.”
Wedawin purchased her ticket from Rochdi’s independent Grocer at 250 Old Airport Road in Yellowknife on July 15. She discovered her win two weeks later, on July 26. She returned to the same store the following day to have the cashier validate her win.
The winner has plans for her recent windfall; “I’m going to pay some bills, and my parents are adopting a baby so some money will go towards the baby.”
“It’s still shocking; I still feel like I need to carry the ticket everywhere with me,” she added with a laugh.
