Many Yellowknife residents are worrying about how to keep food on the table and kitchen cupboards full during the holiday season when there are so many other expenses to think about as well.
That’s why Your Independent Grocer has launched the Holiday Food Drive at their stores throughout Yellowknife. From November 29th to December 24th, all Independent Grocer stores will be collecting non-perishable food items as well as cash donations to help community members in need across Yellowknife. One hundred percent of donations collected at each store will go to YK Food Bank or the Yellowknife Salvation Army.
Trevor Bayer of Trevor’s Your Independent Grocer stated that the holiday season is food-focused, but it’s also when some worry about how to keep their cupboards full.
“This season, we’re asking for Yellowknife residents to donate non-perishable food items or cash at our store locations. These donations will help our community members using the YK Food Bank and the Yellowknife Salvation Army. We’re accepting donations until December 24 at our store locations.”
Food Banks Canada’s Hunger Count 2019 Report shows that in the territories, children make up close to 35 percent of those using the services of food banks.
Coleen McClean from the YK Food Bank states that as the winter closes in, and especially leading up to the holidays, there are many stresses on a household budget.
“Sometimes there just isn’t enough money for everything. The Your Independent Grocer holiday campaign comes at a perfect time each year to help make the holidays brighter for everyone, and to help local food banks, and our clients, get through the long months ahead.”
This year, Your Independent Grocer is calling once again for donations of nutritious non-perishable food items as well as cash. Last year during the Holiday Food Drive residents of the NWT donated thousands of pounds of non-perishable food to local food banks across the province.
