The Tibbitt to Contwoyto winter road opened to commercial traffic for the season Wednesday morning.

The road goes about 600 kilometres from the end of the Ingraham Trail northeast to the diamond mines that partner to build it.

The road serves three of the territory’s diamond mines, including Ekati, Diavik and Gahcho Kué. Supplies for the mines are usually trucked up the roadway about six weeks per winter.

“There will be large truck traffic on the ice road and the Ingraham trail over the next two-month period,” read an advisory issued by the Diavik diamond mine.

“The public is discouraged from using this industrial ice road but if you must, do so at your own risk. If you must use the road, be aware that there are no services available, and please drive safely.”

Last year, the winter road opened a week later than normal on Feb. 9. The latest closure date for the road so far this century was Apr. 16 back in 2002.

The roadway was first built in 1982 and formed the setting for the TV show Ice Road Truckers.
