As part of efforts by the GNWT and the Government of Canada to invest in strategic infrastructure that creates jobs and economic opportunities for Northern businesses, construction of phase one of the Prohibition Creek Access Road (PCAR) near Norman Wells began earlier this week.
Valued at $25. 5 million, construction of phase one of the access road will be cost-shared by the Government of Canada (75%) and the GNWT (25%) under the Green Infrastructure Stream of the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program and is anticipated to take 12 months to complete.
HRN Contracting Ltd, a Norman Wells-based, Sahtu-beneficiary-owned company has been awarded the contract to build 6.7 km of all-season road between Canyon Creek and Christina Creek, along the existing Mackenzie Valley Winter Road alignment and the proposed all-season Mackenzie Valley Highway between Wrigley and Norman Wells.
Building the road between Canyon Creek and Christina Creek will help to connect communities, make transportation safer, and benefit Northerners by creating jobs and other economic opportunities in the Sahtu region.
This project reflects the GNWT’s commitment to build and support local and northern capacity in the Sahtu region in advance of the future Mackenzie Valley Highway project. All levels of government continue to work together for Northerners to make strategic infrastructure investments in communities across the territory.
