Yellowknife, NWT – N.W.T residents and tourists are encouraged to be water smart at all times while enjoying activities around rivers and lakes.
In a news release for National Drowning Prevention Week, which is being recognized across the country until Sunday, Health Minister Glen Abernethy says he understands there has been a decrease in the number of water-related fatalities in the territory, but says there must be greater awareness for measures that can prevent future drowning.
The G.N.W.T says the number of water-related fatalities fell from 12.1% per 100,000 people in 2002-2007 to 6.9% per 100,000 in 2007-2011.
The territorial government says those numbers are still higher than the national average.
