Ecology North Plans Full Schedule of Events for Earth Week

To help celebrate Earth Week in Yellowknife, Ecology North has a number of special events on the way.

Strating on Sunday, April 21^st, the day before Earth Day, and running until April 28^th, Ecology North will be putting on events every day of the week to help residents learn how they can be more mindful of their environment.

A member of Ecology North, Hannah Ascough, shared some details on what she feels will be the most exciting events.

“Something that I’m really excited for is, on Thursday, April 25^th, from 7:30 to 9:30 at the Northern United Place auditorium, there’s going to be a panel hosted by Alternatives North called “Communicating the Future.” So the idea of this panel is thinking through how we’re going to communicate with future generations about Giant Mine. There’s going to be a screening of a film, and then we’re going to hear from some guest speakers, so I’m pretty pumped about that one!”

Every day throughout the week will have at least one event going on, and they vary from simple lunch and learn events, to movie nights, to even a writing exercise with Northwords.

For those who won’t be able to make it to any of the events, Hannah reassures that there are still ways one can take part in Earth Week.

“At Ecology North, obviously, every day is Earth Day, and Every Week is Earth Week. So while this week is exciting and a celebration, if you can’t make it to events, we just really want to encourage people spend this week going outside, connecting to your family, to your friends, and really reflecting on your relationship to the land and to one another. For us, that’s really what Earth Week is meant to be.”

Hannah suggests that if people can’t make it to any of the events, they can still head outside every few days and look around for any litter that may be left out in the community. She also encourages residents to keep an eye out for any events that are happening outside of what Ecology North has planned.
