GNWT Acknowledges 10th Anniversary of Devolution Agreement

The Intergovernmental Council on Land and Resource Management recently celebrated the tenth anniversary of a major milestone.

During a meeting at the start of April, the Council acknowledged the tenth anniversary of the Devolution Agreement, as well as the attached Intergovernmental Agreement on Lands and Resources Management. These articles were significant for allowing the Northwest Territories to have a greater control over various lands, resources, and other programs, which allowed for more efficient and responsive decision making abilities for situations that are unique to the Territories.

The Devolution Agreement was first launched in 2014, and even helped to develop the Intergovernmental Council. Over the following decade, I has helped IGC members to work together in finding common grounds and priorities.

In a statement, R.J. Simpson, the Premier of the Northwest Territories, said that “April 2024 marks a significant milestone for the Northwest Territories as we celebrate the 10-year anniversary of Devolution. The Government of the Northwest Territories would like to take this opportunity to thank IGC partners for the precedent-setting collaboration over this timeframe.

As the territory’s new government charts the course for the future, building better relationships between IGC partners and the GNWT will play a key role in the success of the territory’s communities and economy.”
