Dettah Ice Road Expected to Close According to Yearly Average

Keeping up with the 20-year average, the Dettah Ice Road is expected to be closing around April 16th.

The Department of Infrastructure has stated that they will be keeping a close eye on the road in the next two weeks as we progress through the month and approach the time when the ice typically melts enough for the road to be closed. The Department added that they will only close the road once the water on the Yellowknife side is too deep for low clearance vehicles.

Once the time comes, the Department of Infrastructure will issue a 72 hour notice, then a 48 hour notice before closing the road, with plenty of updates given out to members of their email list, and on their respective Facebook and Twitter pages.

While the opening and closing of all ice and winter roads are affected by conditions such as air temperature, daylight, and snowfall, the Department says that there were no major challenges experienced along the Dettah Ice Road this year.
