Two Impaired Drivers Charged in RCMP Weekend Report

RCMP Officers across the Territories responded to approximately 305 calls to service over the December 15th weekend.

On December 15th, 2023, a woman presented herself to the Fort Simpson RCMP Detachment. The woman had an outstanding arrest warrant and was taken into the custody. While she was being searched, RCMP located approximately 250 grams of crack-cocaine as well as a number of other items of drug paraphernalia. It is unclear why the woman brought these items to the RCMP Detachment with her. Krista Okrainec, 37, of Fort Simpson has been charged with possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking.

On December 16th, 2023, officers in Inuvik were conducting traffic enforcement when they located and stopped a driver who was suspected to be under the influence of alcohol. A roadside screening device was used and the driver failed before being arrested and brought to the Inuvik Detachment to provide breath samples. The samples indicated that the driver was over the legal limit and the 34-year-old female driver from Inuvik, faces charges of impaired driving and driving while over the legal limit.  Traffic enforcement continues throughout the territory as part of Operation Gingerbread – a month long traffic safety initiative designed to keep our roads safe from impaired drivers.

On December 16th, 2023, the Hay River RCMP were on patrol conducting traffic enforcement. Around 9:30 p.m., an officer saw a snowmobile driving on the highway and noted that the headlight on the snowmobile was not working and that the two passengers were not wearing helmets. The officer conducted a traffic stop and determined that the driver was under the influence of alcohol. The driver failed a roadside screening test and was then brought to the Hay River Detachment to provide breath samples. The samples determined that the driver was over the legal limit and the 31-year-old man from the Hay River area now faces charges of impaired driving and driving over the legal limit.
