On December 8th, the Fort Smith RCMP recovered a handgun during an unrelated investigation. Officers were at a home in Fort Smith following up on a non-criminal matter when they formed grounds to arrest a male who was at the residence. A subsequent search of the home resulted in the recovery of a semi-automatic handgun.
“The presence of illegally possessed handguns in our communities presents a risk to everyone. We have seen a number of recent incidents involving the seizure of firearms or gun violence that have impacted our communities in tragic ways. The RCMP remains committed to getting these weapons off the street and destroying them so they cannot cause further harm,” Cpl. Matt Halstead, RCMP NT Media Relations.
Investigators are consulting with RCMP firearms experts to determine the appropriate charges.
