Northland Utilities Explains Higher Utility Prices After Evacuations

Yellowknife residents may notice a slightly higher fee on their next utility bill.

Since returning from the evacuation, some locals who have received their power or water bills have noticed that they have been much higher than normal, though Northland Utilities, who provides these services to much of Yellowknife, has an explanation.

The Manager of Northland Utilities, Vic Barr, explained why this is happening.

“Northland Utilities paused bill printing and delivery to customers in impacted communities, effective August 18, with the resumption of billing in October. Customers under evacuation order were charged for the electricity their home or business used during that period, such as appliances left plugged in.

Recognizing the hardships faced by our customers, we have taken measures to ease their financial burden by waiving late fees for all customers until December 31, 2023, providing additional flexibility during this challenging period. For those who require additional assistance, our team is working with customers on a case-by-case basis to establish payment plans.

We understand that the impacts of the wildfire have been challenging and have made extensive efforts to keep our customers informed throughout this process.”

Vic added that Northland Utilities are committed to working closely with customers to address concerns during this recovery period, and they should not hesitate to contact the company for any clarification on their bills.
