NTPC Encouraging Residents to Create Emergency Kits for Winter Season

The Northwest Territories Power Corporation is encouraging northern residents to make sure they have a family emergency kit to be prepared for the winter season.

The cold weather of NWT winters is right around the corner, and taking the proper precautions can make all the difference in how easy of a time residents have in getting through it. Having an emergency kit prepped and at the ready can be a vital piece of that process. For the most part, Emergency Kits are comprised of common household supplies, so much of the work may already be done for some homes.

Food and water are the first items in a kit that should be considered. It is recommended that at least one litre of water be stored for every member of the home, along with a a several-day supply of non-perishable food.

Flashlights, first aid kits, spare batteries, and a battery-powered or hand crank radio are also important items to include. If an emergency plan includes any kind of travel, cash, travelers’ cheques, and important family documents will be critical.

It’s a good idea to separate some of these supplies throughout multiple backpacks. That way, the kits will be more portable and each person can personalize his or her own grab-and-go emergency kit.
