MMIWG monument unveiled in front of NWT Legislative Assembly

On Canada’s National Day of Action for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG), a monument honouring the lives of MMIWG affected women was unveiled in front of the Legislative Assembly in Yellowknife.

A ceremony featuring MLAs and MMIWG representatives gathered in front of the NWT Legislative Assembly to witness the reveal of the installation.

“Something that stuck with me from the ceremony was when someone said this monument is for all of us, reflects all of us, and reminds us that we need to value each other,” MLA for Yellowknife South Caroline Wawzonek says.

The statue resembles a figure in a red dress, signifying the life and loss of countless women and girls from across the country, standing tall above a fire pit and benches for passers by to sit and reflect in front of the piece.
