GNWT Renewes Five Years Conservation Plan

The GNWT has released a renewed workplan to advance protected areas and conservation areas in the territory.

The Healthy Land, Healthy People plan has been updated to outline priorities and actions to guide the GNWT’s collaborative approach to identifying, establishing, and implementing protected areas and conservation areas – known as the Northwest Territories’ (NWT) conservation network.

There are five actions prioritized under the plan.

– Advance planning and decision-making on the establishment of protected areas.

– Support the effective and equitable management of national, territorial, and Indigenous protected areas and conservation areas.

– Inform and educate the public about the conservation network.

– Pursue sustainable, long-term funding for the establishment, planning, management, and operations of protected areas.

– Support Indigenous-led conservation and stewardship initiatives.

All of these actions are expected to be completed between within the next five years.
