Legislative Assembly Fund Changes Name to Honour Former Member

The Yellowknife Community Foundation has officially changed the name of their Legislative Assembly of the NWT fund.

The name has been changed to the Haylee Carlson Memorial Legislative Assembly Fund. The Fund was originally established in 2014 by the Northwest Territories Legislative Assembly to support Northwest Territories residents pursuing post-secondary studies in political science or a related field.

The purpose of Fund has not changed, and Northwest Territories residents of at least 10 years, pursuing studies in political science, public policy, law, political research, journalism, public administration or a related field can apply to the Fund each year through the Yellowknife Community Foundation’s scholarship application portal. The Foundation’s scholarship application portal opens annually in April and May.

Haylee Carlson helped establish the fund in 2014. She believed that education was a life long endeavor, and was in the middle of her own academic pursuits when she passed away from breast cancer in 2020 at the age of 37. Haylee is remembered as a compassionate, courageous, selfless warrior who always thought of others before herself even at the last stages of her life.

Laurie Gault, Chair of the Yellowknife Community Foundation, shared a statement about the name change, saying “We are deeply honoured to rename this Fund in honour of Haylee. We look forward to awarding scholarships to individuals in the field of political science, who exemplify the enthusiasm, dedication and passion for work and life that clearly Haylee lived in hers.”

Donations in Haylee’s memory can be made to the Haylee Carlson Memorial Legislative Assembly Fund by clicking here.
